From John Whetten: On Friday, March 13, 1998 there was a conference held in Chihuahua City for church members from the Chihuahua-Mexico, Chihuahua-Chuviscar, Chihuahua-Tecnolsgico, Chihuahua-Delicious, Colonia Juarez, Colonia Dublan stakes and the Parral and La Sierra districts of the state of Chihuahua. President Gordon B. Hinckley, Elder L. Tom Perry, Elder Eran Call were there and addressed the conference. Also attending and speaking at the conference were Sister Perry, Sister Call and President Hinckley's son.
This was part of a tour by President Hinckley through northern Mexico, starting at Hermosillo on Monday and ending with a regional conference in Ciudad Juarez on Saturday and Sunday. Those of us from Colonia Juarez and Colonia Dublan stakes were especially happy to have been present at the groundbreaking for new temple in Colonia Juarez only the Saturday before, then having President Hinckley remember his visit last June to the Colonies for the Juarez Academy centennial. He then told us of the inspiration that came to him on his return to El Paso about having a small temple in the Colonies. He indicated that it should take less than a year to build and that he hoped he could return to dedicate it.
The saints were taught about their responsibilities in missionary work and living worthy of a temple recommend. Specific instructions were given to live worthy for and carry a temple recommend. We were especially asked to fellowship and retain new converts. These and other instructions coupled with the added responsibility to prepare our lives so as to serve in the temple can bring us to a much higher level of commitment and service in the gospel. To become a Zion people is now a personal challenge for each of us.
Thank you, President Hinckley, for all you have done for us and for the love you show for all of us. We are determined to do what you ask.
